Maurice Burke (1921-2013) was a British designer celebrated for his modernist approach to furniture. Educated in industrial design, Burke developed a strong foundation in clean lines and functional aesthetics, influenced by the Scandinavian and American design movements of the 1950s. He rose to prominence through his work with Arkana, a British furniture manufacturer established in 1950s known for its use of moulded plastics, fibreglass and metal which allowed for sleek functional designs. One of Burke’s most iconic creations is the Tulip Table, inspired by Eero Saarinen’s pedestal designs. His version, made for Arkana, features a minimalist central base and a sleek circular or oval top, embodying the era's emphasis on form and practicality.
