Tapley 33 Modular Wall Units by Robert Heritage for Beaver & Tapley
The Tapley 33 system was designed by Robert Heritage for Beaver & Tapley during the 1960s, at a moment when British furniture design was beginning to embrace the flexibility and architectural thinking seen in Scandinavian interiors. Rather than a fixed cabinet, Heritage conceived Tapley 33 as a modular system made up of individual wall mounted elements that could be arranged freely across a wall.
Each cabinet and shelf is mounted as a separate unit, allowing the composition to be adjusted over time. Storage, display and workspace can be combined in a way that responds to the room rather than dictating it. In this example, enclosed cabinets sit alongside open shelving and drop down desk units, creating a balanced arrangement that works equally well in a living room, study or bedroom.
Manufactured in teak, the system carries the warm tone and fine grain typical of British furniture from the period. The clean lines and restrained detailing reflect Heritage’s broader approach to design: practical, carefully considered and quietly elegant.
Robert Heritage (1927-2022) was one of Britain’s most respected post-war designers. Educated at the Royal College of Art, he worked across furniture, lighting and industrial design, producing work for manufacturers including Archie Shine, Race Furniture and Beaver & Tapley. His designs often balanced modernist clarity with the craftsmanship of traditional cabinet making.
The Tapley 33 range remains one of the most thoughtful British modular storage systems of the period, combining flexibility with a calm, architectural presence.
