Vintage Wooden Pig Toothpick Holder by Aarika (Finland)

Aarikka produced a small series of wooden animals during the 60s and 70s, each made from turned birch with simple sculptural shapes.

Aarikka is one of Finland’s most recognisable design houses, founded in 1954 by Kaija Aarikka. Known for its use of natural materials and its distinctly Scandinavian approach, the company built its reputation on simple, sculptural forms crafted from Finnish wood.

Originally starting with hand turned wooden buttons, Aarikka expanded into homeware and decorative objects, creating pieces that feel warm, tactile and quietly playful. Their wooden animal figures are now highly collected, each one reflecting the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and its clear design language of rounded forms and pared-back detail.

This wooden pig was manufactured in the 1960s. Turned and carved from wood and finished in a vivid red stain, the little pig has a beautifully simple, sculptural form with pointed ears, tapered legs and an opening along the back for holding cocktail sticks or toothpicks.

Its playful design has a distinctly Scandinavian feel and sits very happily alongside midcentury ceramics, wooden objects and tableware. We haven’t been able to confirm the maker, so are selling it unattributed.

A lovely small object for a drinks trolley, dining table or shelf.
