Mid-Century Teak Bureau by Welters of Wycombe, England, c.1960s

A beautifully proportioned mid century bureau by Welters of Wycombe, combining practical storage with the clean lines and thoughtful detailing that defined British furniture design during the 1960s.

Manufactured in teak, the bureau has four dovetailed drawers beneath a pull out writing surface finished in its original black leather, which remains in excellent condition with no rips or tears. Above, a pair of tambour doors slide open to reveal a fitted interior of shelves and pigeonholes, providing useful storage for stationery, paperwork or treasured objects.

The bureau has been carefully restored in our workshop, with the timber stripped and re-oiled to bring out the warmth and character of the grain. The interior is particularly well executed, with finely crafted compartments and elegant tambour doors that reflect the quality of British cabinet making of the period.

Founded in High Wycombe, the historic centre of the British furniture trade, Welters of Wycombe produced a range of well made modern furniture during the post war years. While less widely known than some of their contemporaries, their pieces are increasingly appreciated for their quality of construction, practical design and understated aesthetic. High Wycombe was home to many of Britain’s most respected furniture manufacturers, and Welters formed part of this rich tradition of craftsmanship.  

The bureau has a surprisingly compact footprint, making it equally suited to a living room, bedroom or home office.

Condition

Very good vintage condition. The teak has been stripped and re-oiled. The original black leather writing surface is in excellent condition. There are some minor knocks and signs of age to the tambour section where the writing surface pulls out, all of which have been photographed and are consistent with normal use over the last sixty years. The drawers, writing surface and tambour doors all operate smoothly.
