"Slalom" Yellow Desk Lamp, Vico Magistretti for Oluce, (1980s) Italy
Slalom Table Lamp by Vico Magistretti for Oluce, 1981
Designed in 1981, the Slalom table lamp is a sharp, graphic piece by Vico Magistretti, combining a sculptural steel structure with a bold, rectilinear shade. The lamp’s name refers to its angled, dynamic stance, with the slender black metal frame offsetting the brightly coloured lacquered shade. Compact yet visually striking, it works equally well as a desk lamp or a statement light on a sideboard or shelf.
The design reflects Magistretti’s ability to reduce an object to its essential elements while retaining wit and personality. The Slalom is both functional and expressive, characteristic of Italian lighting design of the late 20th century.
Designer
Vico Magistretti (1920–2006) was one of Italy’s most influential post-war designers and architects. Trained at the Politecnico di Milano, he worked across architecture, furniture and industrial design, producing some of the most recognisable objects of the 20th century. His work is defined by clarity of form, technical intelligence and an understated sense of humour. Magistretti collaborated with leading manufacturers including Cassina, Artemide and Oluce, and his designs are held in the permanent collections of museums such as MoMA, New York.
Manufacturer
Founded in 1945, Oluce is Italy’s oldest lighting design company and has played a central role in shaping modern lighting. The company became particularly significant in the 1950s and 60s through collaborations with designers including Joe Colombo, Marco Zanuso and Vico Magistretti. Oluce is known for technically innovative designs that balance experimentation with longevity, many of which remain in production today.
