Celadon-Green Glaze Stoneware Bowl by Audrey Stockwin
Celadon-Green Glaze Stoneware Bowl by Audrey Stockwin
Audrey Stockwin Stoneware Bowl
A stoneware bowl by Audrey Stockwin, finished in a soft celadon-green glaze that breaks gently across the surface to reveal the warm iron-rich clay beneath. The form is simple and unforced, with a slightly flared rim and delicate foot ring that lifts the bowl from the table. Flecks and variations within the glaze are the result of the firing process, giving each piece a unique character.
The bowl demonstrates the qualities for which Stockwin’s work is admired: restraint, balance and a deep understanding of materials. Intended for everyday use, it is equally satisfying as a functional object or displayed amongst a collection of studio ceramics.
About the Potter
Audrey Stockwin (1936–2018) was one of Britain’s most respected studio potters. Working for much of her career from her pottery in Devon, she became known for quietly elegant domestic wares inspired by Japanese and Korean ceramics, as well as the traditions of British studio pottery established by Bernard Leach.
Stockwin believed that pottery should enrich daily life. Rather than producing decorative showpieces, she devoted herself to making bowls, cups and vessels that could be used and enjoyed every day. Her work is characterised by subtle glazes, carefully considered forms and an appreciation of the natural qualities of clay.
