Nuutajärvi Glass Bird – Siberian Jay by Oiva Toikka
Finland, 1990s
A hand-blown glass bird designed by Oiva Toikka for Nuutajärvi, Finland’s oldest glassworks. This model, the Siberian Jay, features a soft, clouded white body with warm hints of orange at the tail and a glossy dark beak, capturing the quiet beauty of its namesake bird from the Finnish forests.
Like all of Toikka’s birds, this piece is individually made, showcasing subtle variations in form and colour. The Siberian Jay was part of Toikka’s long-running “Birds by Toikka” series, one of the most beloved collections in Scandinavian glass design.
Toikka’s work stands apart from the restrained minimalism of Finnish modernism. His birds are full of life and expression, blending technical skill with a deep sense of character.
