The Eames shell chair began life in the late 1940s, when Charles and Ray Eames were exploring how to create a comfortable chair from a single moulded form. First produced in fibreglass in 1950, the design developed into an extensive family of chairs using the same basic shell with different bases depending on how and where the chair was intended to be used.

The DSS, introduced in the 1950s, stands for Dining Height Side Chair Stacking Base. Its distinctive steel base was designed specifically so that the chairs could be stacked efficiently, making them particularly suitable for schools, offices, meeting rooms and other public spaces. The bases can also be linked together to create rows of seating.

These later Vitra examples use moulded plastic rather than the fibreglass of the earliest Eames chairs. The material gives the shell a smooth, even surface while retaining the same curved profile and proportions of Charles and Ray Eames’ original design. The Elephant Grey works particularly well with the chromed steel bases.

The chairs were manufactured in 2015 and retain their Vitra manufacturer’s markings.

Some minor scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use.
