A Peter Wills porcelain bowl finished in a dry blue-green glaze. The bowl has a finely potted, gently flared form with a small foot ring and a translucent glaze that pools and breaks across the surface to create an intricate cellular pattern. The decoration extends across both the interior and exterior, giving the piece a depth and complexity that changes as it catches the light.

The glaze is particularly characteristic of late twentieth-century studio ceramics, where experimentation with materials and firing techniques became as important as form. The pale green tones and organic surface patterning contrast with the precision of the porcelain body, demonstrating the balance between control and chance that is central to studio pottery.

Potter

Peter Wills (b.1955) is a British studio potter known for his porcelain vessels and highly developed glaze effects. He studied ceramics at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts before establishing his own workshop practice. Throughout his career he has explored the technical possibilities of porcelain and glaze chemistry, producing work that sits between functional pottery and ceramic art.

Unlike many potters working within the Leach tradition, Wills became interested in more experimental ceramic surfaces, developing glazes that produce crystalline, mottled and cellular effects during firing. His work has been exhibited widely and is admired for its combination of technical precision and visual complexity.

Condition

Very good vintage condition. Craze lines are present within the glaze, consistent with the firing and age of the piece. No evidence of restoration. The bowl rings clearly when tapped.
