Pair of Brazilian Rosewood Custom Made Lounge Chairs with Cane Backrests, by Jack Cluer, c.1960s

A striking pair of handmade midcentury lounge chairs in rosewood, with beautifully constructed frames and woven cane backs.

 Made by John “Jack” Cluer, a skilled craftsman and teacher who later established craft study courses at Eastbourne College in 1976. His work there centred on making, woodworking and design, and he was remembered for his craftsmanship, patience and ability to encourage others to develop practical creative skills.

The provenance comes directly from hiss daughter , who remembers the cane for these chairs being soaked in the bath while her father was making them when she was around three or four years old. It gives the chairs a lovely personal history.

We have already stripped and oiled the rosewood frames, which has brought back the richness and depth of the timber while retaining their original character. The cane backs are in place and the chairs now only need slim seat cushions, which we will make in-house.

The price includes your choice of fabric from our mid-range collections. Premium fabrics, including bouclé, and leather are available at an additional cost.
