A beautiful walnut low chest designed by Ole Wanscher in the 1940s, raised on slender tapering legs and fitted with six drawers arranged in two banks of three. The drawers retain their original brass swan neck handles, a restrained detail that complements the elegant proportions of the piece.

The chest demonstrates Wanscher’s characteristic approach to furniture design, drawing on classical forms while refining them for modern interiors. The clean lines, light structure and carefully balanced proportions reflect the influence of traditional English cabinetmaking, which Wanscher studied closely, translated through the clarity of Danish modern design.

The walnut has a beautiful, consistent grain across the drawer fronts, Inside, the drawers remain lined with their original baize.

Compact bit with generous storage, the chest works well as a bedroom piece, dressing table base or elegant storage in a living space.

Designer

Ole Wanscher (1903–1985)

Ole Wanscher was one of the leading figures of twentieth century Danish furniture design. Trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kaare Klint, he later succeeded Klint as Professor of Furniture Design in 1955. Wanscher was known for his scholarly approach to furniture history and his careful study of historical forms, which he translated into modern furniture with exceptional craftsmanship and proportion.

Many of his designs were produced by master cabinetmakers including A. J. Iversen and P. Jeppesen and are now considered among the most refined examples of Danish modern furniture.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition. The drawers run smoothly and retain their original baize linings. The walnut shows a rich tone with only light, age-appropriate wear.
