Nest of Four Tables by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen for France & Daverkosen, Denmark, c.1960

A beautiful and increasingly hard to find nest of four tables designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen for Danish manufacturer France & Daverkosen, dating from around 1960.

Made in richly figured ziricote, the four tables are designed to sit neatly beneath one another, each with a simple rectangular top and finely proportioned solid timber frame. It is a particularly elegant example of Danish modern design - practical, beautifully made and visually very light despite the richness of the timber.

Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were among Denmark’s most important post-war designers, working together from the 1940s onwards. Their furniture combined traditional cabinetmaking with a more modern, functional approach and was produced by some of Denmark’s leading manufacturers, including France & Daverkosen.

This set has particularly good provenance, having come from the property of James France of France & Son. The manufacturer’s plaque remains attached to the frame.

The tables are structurally solid but do require restoration. We will restore the timber carefully in-house, retaining as much of the original surface and character as possible while bringing the set back to a condition in which it can be properly used and enjoyed.

A very special set with both excellent design credentials and unusually direct provenance.
