The Aeron chair was designed in 1994 by Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf for Herman Miller. Their goal was to rethink office seating in a way that supported the human body as it moved, using innovative materials rather than traditional foam and upholstery. The result was a radical departure from conventional task chairs, both in aesthetics and construction.

Bill Stumpf (1936–2006) was a pioneer of ergonomic design, known for placing human wellbeing at the centre of his work. He collaborated extensively with Herman Miller on systems that prioritised comfort, productivity, and movement.

Don Chadwick (b. 1936) trained as an industrial designer in California and remains one of the most influential figures in American furniture design. Together, their Aeron chair became an instant design icon, included in MoMA’s permanent collection, and remains one of the most recognisable and enduring office chairs ever made.
