This lovely Sgraffito bowl was hand thrown by a potter in the midcentury. Sgraffito is a technique where potters put a layer of glaze or slip on a piece of pottery, let it dry, then use a pottery carving tool to scratch at it to show the base layer of colour. Scraffito derives from the Italian word meaning "to scratch".

Michael Cardew (1901-1983) was a pupil of prolific potter Bernard Leach. He went on to run Winchcombe pottery in Gloucestershire where he produced mainly domestic ware. During the 1930s he moved to Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall where he began to experiment with new ceramic shapes and decorations. A retrospective exhibition was mounted at the crafts council in 1976 and he was awarded the OBE for contribution to British ceramics the same year. He has published many significant books on the art of pottery.
