Hans Wegner Beech & Teak Heart Dining Set For Fritz Hansen, (1960s) Denmark
Hans Wegner Beech & Teak Heart Dining Set For Fritz Hansen, (1960s) Denmark
Hans Wegner ‘Heart’ Dining Set in Beech and Teak, 1950s
A beautifully proportioned Danish dining set designed by Hans Wegner, comprising a circular dining table and four matching ‘Heart’ dining chairs in beech and teak. Originally designed for Fritz Hansen in the early 1950s, the Heart chair is one of Wegner’s more playful and sculptural designs, recognisable by its distinctive heart-shaped seat and softly curved backrest.
The design is deceptively simple but incredibly well considered. The chairs tuck neatly beneath the circular table, creating a compact footprint that works particularly well in smaller dining spaces, apartments or open-plan kitchens where space and flow matter. From every angle the set has a strong sculptural quality, with Wegner balancing lightness, comfort and practicality in the way only the best Danish designers could.
Hans Wegner (1914-2007) is widely regarded as one of the most important furniture designers of the twentieth century. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, he became central to the Danish modern movement alongside figures such as Børge Mogensen and Finn Juhl. Wegner designed over 500 chairs during his lifetime, always with a strong focus on craftsmanship, proportion and the honest use of materials. His work remains timeless because it was never driven by trends - only by function, construction and the experience of living with the furniture every day.
This set retains a lovely warmth and patina to the timber. We will carry out some light restoration work to the wood before delivery, including cleaning, minor refinishing and oiling where needed, while keeping the character of the original finish intact.
Please note that the photographs are good representations of the piece which needs the woodwork cleaning. The set is sturdy with minimal wear..The tones and overall appearance are very accurate, though as with all vintage furniture there will be natural variations, marks and signs of age visible in person.
