Finn Juhl ‘58 Chair’ Watercolour Study Print

Published by Ordrupgaard Museum, Denmark

This framed print reproduces a watercolour study by Danish designer and architect Finn Juhl (1912–1989) showing the celebrated ‘58 Chair’ from several angles. Juhl frequently used watercolour and gouache to explore ideas before production, allowing him to refine proportion, structure and the sculptural quality that defines his furniture. The drawing captures the chair’s distinctive form, the floating seat and backrest supported by a refined timber frame, a composition that reflects Juhl’s lifelong interest in the relationship between furniture and the human body.

Trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Juhl became one of the central figures of Danish modern design. His work broke away from strict functionalism, introducing a more expressive and organic language to mid-century furniture. Designs such as the Pelican Chair (1940), Chieftain Chair (1949) and the ‘58 Chair’ demonstrate his sculptural approach, where individual elements appear almost separate from the frame yet work together as a balanced whole.

The original drawing referenced on the print was prepared for the 1953 Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen, where Danish designers and cabinetmakers presented experimental and forward-looking furniture. These exhibitions were instrumental in establishing Denmark’s international reputation for furniture design during the mid-twentieth century.

This example has been newly framed with museum-grade art glass, giving the print a clean, calm presentation suitable for both modern and mid-century interiors.
