Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was a leading American Abstract Expressionist painter. He was known for his expressive canvases and collages, often using automation - spontaneous creation to express inner feelings. His work frequently incorporated bold shapes and colours, as seen In this lithograph. Motherwell was also a writer and theorist, connecting pre-war European avant-garde with post-war New York art.
