-----------
Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were among the most interesting figures in post-war Danish design. They began working together in the 1940s and went on to build a long running partnership that combined elegant Scandinavian modernism with a very practical understanding of how furniture should be made and used.
Their work is particularly known for its lightness and clarity. Rather than relying on heavy forms or decoration, they focused on beautifully resolved timber frames, refined proportions and clever construction. They were also interested in furniture that could be produced efficiently and transported more easily, which made their work feel very modern for the period.
Much of their best known furniture was produced by France & Son, one of Denmark’s leading mid-century manufacturers, and their designs from the 1950s and 1960s have become increasingly sought after.
The FD130 is a lovely example of their approach - elegant but not delicate, with a beautifully constructed frame, gently shaped arms and a lightness that makes it feel much less imposing than many three-seater sofas of the period.
