1970's Space Age Mushroom Floor Lamp by Prova lighting, (Italy)
A beautifully designed floor lamp drawing clear inspiration from the work of Harvey Guzzini, particularly the celebrated Lucerna series of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
What sets this example apart is its construction - a globe within a globe. At its centre sits a white Perspex sphere which diffuses the light source, producing an even, atmospheric glow when illuminated. This inner form is encased within a smoked Perspex outer shade, softening the light further and creating depth rather than glare.
The effect changes subtly from day to evening, it's sculptural and reflective when unlit, then warm and ambient once switched on. It’s a thoughtful piece of lighting design that feels architectural rather than decorative.
The slender steel stem and weighted circular base keep the form restrained, allowing the floating double sphere to remain the visual focus, very much in keeping with the optimistic material experimentation of Italian Space Age lighting.
The lamp has recently been rewired with a new cord and UK plug.
