Caroline's Edit - Gifts For The People I Love
Hi Everyone,
I’m quite particular when I buy gifts (as you probably know by now). I like things with character, good design, a bit of history - pieces that feel considered rather than generic. So I’ve pulled together a small selection from the shop and matched each one with the person it immediately made me think of.
These are the gifts I’d give to my Mum, my Dad, Marcus, friends… and even one I’d happily buy for myself. I’ve written a little note for each, and you’ll find the products tagged if one catches your eye for someone you’re buying for this year.
I hope you find something here that feels just right - thoughtful, personal, and full of that lovely magic a really good gift can have.
1960s ice bucket & Tongs by Arne Jacobsen for Stelton
For Megan,
Megan has the most impeccable taste - nothing in her house is ever accidental. Everything is considered, beautifully placed, and completely her. And because she also makes a seriously good cocktail, this original 1960s Arne Jacobsen Cylinda-Line ice bucket (with its matching tongs) feels perfect for her. I can picture it sitting on her sideboard next to her vintage glasses - elegant, a bit iconic, and entirely her.
Cobalt blue vase by Tamara Aladin for Riihimäen Lasi (Finand 1960s)
For My Mum,
My Mum would absolutely love these. The colour alone is beautiful - that deep cobalt that feels like it shifts as the light moves around the curves of the glass. The shape makes it feel almost like a small sculpture rather than a vase, and I can picture it sitting in her living room, catching the light in that really gentle, elegant way she loves.
'Lucca' Mixed Media Drawing by Alex Mackenzie, (1990) UK
For Marcus,
Obviously whatever I buy Marcus, I get to appreciate too... so with that in mind, I chose this beautiful drawing. Marcus has always loved Alexander Mackenzie - how he can capture a whole feeling, a whole place, with just a handful of lines. There’s something so calm and confident in the simplicity, and it’s exactly the kind of work Marcus is drawn to.
And there’s a brilliant link here that he’d appreciate; David Bowie - who had, by all accounts, an extraordinary eye for art - was a major collector of Mackenzie’s work. In the 2016 Bowie/Collector sale at Sotheby’s, eleven of Mackenzie’s pieces were auctioned, forming one of the strongest strands of Bowie’s St Ives collection. Marcus has done a deep dive into that sale more than once, so I know he’d love this drawing all the more for that connection.
J16 Rocking Chair by Hans Wegner for FDB Mobler, (1970) Denmark
For My Dad,
My Dad is the reader in the family - he can happily disappear into a book or the weekend papers for hours. This Hans Wegner J16 rocking chair would suit him perfectly. It’s comfortable in that effortless, Wegner way, and I can just imagine him settled into it with a coffee, completely absorbed and totally content.
Shanghai Diamond Mechanism Alarm Clock (1960/70s)
For me!
You can buy yourself a Christmas present, right? If I were choosing something for myself, it would be this. I’m completely OBSESSED with it - it’s cool, chic, and classic, with that old-fashioned mechanical alarm that actually gets you up in the morning. It has everything I love in an object: useful, beautifully made, and just a bit stylish in a way you can’t fake.
