DDR-Era Flexible Desk Lamp by Klaus Muslinowski for VEB Dresden
East German Industrial Design in Functional Form
This rare and distinctive desk lamp was designed by Klaus Muslinowski and manufactured by VEB Dresden, a publicly owned lighting and electronics company operating in the former German Democratic Republic (DDR). Produced in the mid-to-late 20th century, it embodies the utilitarian yet forward-looking design language of East German industrial production.
The lamp features a compact rectangular shade, crafted in off-white Bakelite, with an integrated reflector and exposed bulb for direct illumination. A cylindrical maroon housing holds the bulb fitting, and the entire lamp is supported by a sleek metal stem which moves forwards and backwards to tilt the light. and a weighted Bakelite base with a red on/off push-button.
Muslinowski’s design cleverly balances minimalism with mechanical purpose. The lamp was created at a time when East German designers were constrained by materials and production quotas, yet often found innovative ways to deliver style, efficiency, and utility.
The lamp has been PAT tested and has a UK plug
A rare survivor of Cold War-era design, this piece is both a talking point and a functional light source.
