A beautifully hand-carved yew wood sculpture with a strong visual connection to the organic modernism of Barbara Hepworth. The form is elegant and architectural, a continuous sweep of carved curves narrowing into a central pierced opening, a motif long associated with mid-century British sculpture.

The piece is carved from solid yew, a timber chosen for its warm, shifting grain and natural depth of colour. The maker has worked with the wood’s natural movement, allowing the surface to flow in soft ridges that catch the light and accentuate the vertical rise of the form. It feels both grounded and weightless, a quiet study in balance, mass and negative space.

The piece has the sculptures mark etched into the base with its title on a label.  The  sculpture sits firmly within the tradition of post-war British studio carving, where artists explored landscape, material honesty and the relationship between interior and exterior forms. The pierced centre is particularly evocative of Hepworth’s approach: creating an interplay between solidity and void, intimacy and openness.
