Scheurich - West German Pottery, 1950s–70s
Founded in 1928 in Kleinheubach, Germany, Scheurich began life as a wholesaler of glass and porcelain.
In 1954 the firm established its own ceramics factory and began production of pottery and decorative ceramics — the first using an electric tunnel kiln.
Through the 1950s to the 1980s, Scheurich became one of the most prolific and widely exported makers of mid-century ceramics in Germany.
During the 1960s and 1970s their designs became iconic: bold forms, experimental glazes (including the thick, crater-textured “lava” or volcanic-style finishes), strong, saturated colours and sculptural shapes typical of what is now often referred to as “West German Art Pottery.”
Scheurich pieces are marked on the base with a moulded form number followed by the vase height (e.g. 239-41), accompanied by West Germany.
