Ovoid Centrepiece Vase
Pattern 9657 “Twilight”
Designed by Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars Glass, UK, 1960s

Dimensions (top opening): 24 × 12 × 18 cm

Description

A substantial ovoid centrepiece vase in the 9657 “Twilight” pattern, designed by Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars during the 1960s. The form is wide and gently asymmetrical, with a soft, elliptical rim that sits low and generous, designed to hold sculptural arrangements or to stand alone as a statement object.

The Twilight colourway is a rich, graduated brown, moving from a deeper tone at the base to a warm amber glow towards the rim. In natural light the glass shifts subtly, catching reflections and revealing the density and clarity typical of Whitefriars production during this period. The thick cased glass and weighty base give the piece a grounded presence on a table, sideboard or low cabinet.

This example remains in very good vintage condition, with no visible chips or cracks. A strong, architectural piece that works particularly well in mid-century interiors, especially against timber, travertine or neutral plaster walls.

Designer

Geoffrey Baxter (1922-1995) was one of Britain’s most important post-war glass designers. Born in Croydon, he studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, where he trained in painting and illustration before moving into glass design.

In 1954 he joined Whitefriars Glass as chief designer and remained there until 1980. Baxter transformed the company’s output, introducing bold, sculptural forms and experimental surface textures. His ranges included the textured “Bark” vases (1967), the “Drunken Bricklayer” pattern, and a series of substantial architectural bowls and centrepieces, including the 9657 form.

He is best known for combining Scandinavian-inspired simplicity with a distinctly British weight and colour sensibility. Today, Baxter’s Whitefriars pieces are widely collected and form part of major design collections across the UK.
