Landscape on Pavos - Trevor Stubley (1932–2010)

Acrylic on canvas
Signed and titled
Framed dimensions: 32.5 × 37.5 cm

A richly textured and vividly coloured landscape by British artist Trevor Stubley, Landscape on Pavos is a small but expressive work with real presence. Stubley layers bold strokes of red, green, ochre and black to form an abstracted hillside scene, punctuated by the suggestion of a white building and dark cypress-like forms. literal detail.

The work is presented in its original gilt frame with a textured linen slip - a classic mid-century pairing that enhances the warmth and depth of the painting. Signed and titled by the artist, it is a beautifully preserved example of Stubley’s more expressive, landscape-driven output.

About the Artist - Trevor Stubley (1932–2010)

Trevor Stubley was a British painter and illustrator born in Leeds in 1932. He trained at Leeds College of Art and Edinburgh College of Art, later becoming known for his accomplished portraiture - over 500 commissions during his career - including sitters from the Royal Family, academia and the performing arts.

Alongside his portrait work, Stubley produced a significant body of landscapes and still lifes, often marked by strong colour, gestural brushwork and a sensitive observation of place. He worked for many years from his studio in Holmfirth, Yorkshire, and his paintings appear in public and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery.

His landscape pieces, such as Landscape on Pavos, reveal a confident, expressive painter with an instinctive understanding of tone, movement and structure, works that sit beautifully within a mid-century or design-led interior.

The painting is in very good, some slight pitting on the fabric frame, original condition with no obvious faults to report. The painting is ornately framed but not glazed. The frame has some minor scuffs and knocks commensurate with age.
