Digsmed Teak Lazy Susan, Denmark, c.1960s

A solid teak Lazy Susan manufactured by Digsmed, Denmark, during the 1960s. Measuring 35cm in diameter, it retains its original maker’s stamp to the underside and rotates smoothly on its concealed bearing.

Founded in Hørve, Denmark, Digsmed became one of the country’s leading manufacturers of teak kitchenware and serving accessories during the post-war period. The company specialised in practical domestic objects crafted from carefully selected hardwoods, producing serving boards, bowls, trays, cheese boards and Lazy Susans that were exported throughout Europe, Britain and North America.

Like many Danish manufacturers of the period, Digsmed embraced the principles of Scandinavian modernism, producing functional household objects with an emphasis on quality materials, skilled craftsmanship and understated design. Rather than relying on well-known individual designers, the company built its reputation on the consistency of its manufacturing and the quality of its timber, with many pieces bearing the distinctive Digsmed stamp as a mark of Danish manufacture.

The concealed rotating mechanism allows dishes, condiments or serving bowls to be shared easily around the table, making the Lazy Susan a practical addition to mid-century dining. Digsmed continued producing teak household wares for several decades, and their stamped pieces remain a good record of Denmark’s strong tradition of functional domestic design during the twentieth century.
