Aarikka Wooden Female Cow - 1960s Finnish Design

A rare 1960s female cow by Aarikka, Finland. Aarikka produced a small series of wooden animals during the 60s and 70s, each made from turned birch with simple sculptural shapes. The cows are particularly sought after - they were made in small numbers and very few survive in good condition.

This female version has a rounded body, gentle upright horns, and the soft matte birch finish that makes these pieces so special to hold. A perfect addition to any Scandinavian design collection or children’s room.

Aarikka is one of Finland’s most recognisable design houses, founded in 1954 by Kaija Aarikka. Known for its use of natural materials and its distinctly Scandinavian approach, the company built its reputation on simple, sculptural forms crafted from Finnish wood.

Originally starting with hand-turned wooden buttons, Aarikka expanded into homeware and decorative objects, creating pieces that feel warm, tactile and quietly playful. Their wooden animal figures are now highly collected, each one reflecting the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and its clear design language of rounded forms and pared-back detail.

Today Aarikka remains a symbol of Finnish modernism, celebrated for keeping traditional woodcraft alive while maintaining a strong, minimal aesthetic.
