Studio Pottery Bowl
Tony Gant, England, late 20th century

This studio pottery bowl was made by Tony Gant, a British potter associated with the late-20th-century studio ceramics movement. Gant’s work is rooted in functional pottery, with an emphasis on form, proportion and surface rather than decoration.

The bowl is thrown in a coarse stoneware clay, left unglazed on the exterior to emphasise the natural texture of the body. The interior is finished in a soft celadon-green glaze with subtle speckling, creating a quiet contrast between raw and refined surfaces. The gently flared rim and well-balanced profile reflect the influence of Anglo-Oriental pottery traditions, where usability and restraint are central.

The base is stamped with the maker’s mark, confirming authorship. This is a versatile, tactile piece that works equally well as a serving bowl or as a standalone object.

Tony Gant is a British studio potter who has been making stoneware ceramics since the early 1960s. His work is hand-thrown, typically in stoneware clay, and each piece is individually made rather than mass-produced, reflecting the ethos of the British studio pottery movement. Gant established his ceramic practice around 1961, and by 1968 he was working from his own studio, where he has continued to produce functional and everyday ceramics. Pieces attributed to him (including cups, bowls, and vessels) are often stamped with his maker’s mark and identified by their simple, tactile forms and thoughtful glazes.
