Silver-Plated ‘Crown’ Candelabra by Jens Harald Quistgaard for DANSK Designs, (1960s) Denmark
Jens Harald Quistgaard (1919–2008) was the founding designer at DANSK Designs and a key figure in bringing Scandinavian modernism to the American market. Originally trained as a sculptor and metalsmith in Denmark, his work is known for its sculptural clarity and everyday function. From cutlery and teak ice buckets to candleholders and cookware, Quistgaard’s designs helped define a new era of modern tableware—objects that were both beautiful and practical.
DANSK Designs was established in 1954 by American entrepreneur Ted Nierenberg, who discovered Quistgaard’s work in Copenhagen and convinced him to bring his vision to a wider audience. Together they built a brand that remains synonymous with mid-century design.
This silver-plated ‘Crown’ candelabra was designed by Quistgaard in the 1960s and made in France for DANSK. The softened W-shape form features twelve sharp-pointed holders, six raised and six recessed, designed to hold Tiny Tapers or a single large ball candle at its centre. Compact in scale but sculptural in presence, it’s a classic example of Quistgaard’s approach to form and function.
