Set of Four 'Model 223' Rosewood Dining Chairs by HW Klein for Bramin (1960s) Denmark
Set of Four H.W. Klein for Bramin Model 233 Rosewood Dining Chairs (1960s)
A distinguished set of four mid-century dining chairs designed by Henry Walter (H.W.) Klein for Bramin Møbler, Denmark, circa 1960s. Crafted in richly figured rosewood, these chairs feature slender, tapered legs and a gently curved backrest that flows into subtle sculptural rails, hallmarks of Klein’s design approach for Bramin. The seat frames have been carefully stripped and re-oiled, and reupholstered in our workshop in a very soft black/dark grey leather, creating a compelling contrast with the warm rosewood.
The model 233 is recognised among collectors for its elegant proportions and refined joinery; the backrest and seat frame exhibit Klein’s sensitivity to form and structure, while the quality of materials and execution positions this set at the higher end of 1960s Scandinavian seating. These chairs are exceptionally versatile and appropriate both for formal dining arrangements and contemporary interiors that value historic design with renewed usability.
Designer — H.W. Klein (1919–1991)
Henry Walter (H.W.) Klein was a Norwegian-born designer and master cabinetmaker whose work played a significant role in Danish mid-century modern furniture. Born in 1919 in Norway, Klein developed an early interest in woodworking after serving in the Royal Norwegian Navy during World War II, leading him to pursue formal training in cabinetmaking and design. In 1949 he moved to Denmark to study interior design at the Tekniske Skole in Frederiksberg, where he trained under influential Danish designer and architect Finn Juhl, gaining rigorous grounding in proportion, detail and material expression — key tenets of Scandinavian design. After graduating in 1952, Klein established his own practice in Norway before later returning to Denmark.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s Klein began a long association with Bramin Møbler of Bramming, Denmark, designing seating, tables and cabinets that were noted for their refined structural clarity and use of fine woods such as teak and rosewood. His work for Bramin helped define the manufacturer’s output during the post-war period, blending careful craftsmanship with a modern vocabulary of line and form. Klein remained with Bramin until the company’s closure in 1980, and he continued to explore material and production methods throughout his career. Klein died in 1991, leaving behind a body of furniture that remains sought after by collectors of Scandinavian modern design.
