Set of Four Ercol Windsor 365 Dining Chairs

A set of four Ercol Windsor Model 365 dining chairs, designed by Lucian Ercolani and made in England by Ercol.

Lucian Ercolani founded Ercol in High Wycombe in 1920 after training as a furniture designer and maker. Born in Italy and raised in London, he became one of the most important figures in British furniture design, particularly in the post-war period. His work combined traditional cabinetmaking and Windsor chair construction with modern manufacturing techniques, creating furniture that was practical, beautifully made and distinctly modern without abandoning craftsmanship.

Ercol became especially known for its use of steam bent timber, slender turned elements and solid elm seats. The company’s furniture was widely exhibited and sold throughout Britain from the 1950s onwards, and many of its designs have since become classics of British mid century furniture.

The Model 365 is a particularly elegant example of Ercol’s Windsor range. It has a tall, gently curved back formed from a continuous bentwood hoop, with fine vertical spindles and a broad, shaped elm seat. The legs and stretchers are made from beech, while the seat is elm, a combination Ercol used extensively, taking advantage of the strength of beech and the distinctive grain and character of elm.

These four chairs have a warm, naturally aged finish and retain the lightness and simplicity that make Ercol furniture so enduring.
