Rosewood Desk by  P.S. Heggen, Norway, 1970s

A beautifully proportioned Scandinavian desk in richly figured rosewood, made by Heggen in Norway during the 1970s. Practical and elegant in equal measure, it works just as well as a home office desk as it does in a living space as a statement piece.

The design is architectural, with clean lines, solid timber legs and balanced drawer banks either side. Subtle details include the shaped drawer pulls, the slim overhang to the top, and the quality of the timber.. The desk surface is finished in book-matched rosewood veneer laid in a square parquet pattern, where each section mirrors the grain of the next. It creates a gentle, shifting effect in the light and gives the top real depth and character rather than a flat, uniform grain. It’s a detail you tend to see on better-quality pieces, requiring more time and skill to execute.

It’s a piece that feels thoughtful rather than showy, and extremely well made.

P.S. Heggen was a Norwegian furniture manufacturer based in Nordfjordeid, operating from the early 20th century and becoming particularly active during the mid-century period. Known formally as P.S. Heggen Trevarefabrikk, the company specialised in finely made wooden furniture and objects that reflect the principles of Scandinavian Modern design.

During the 1950s-1970s, Heggen produced a range of furniture characterised by restrained forms and an emphasis on high quality timber, including teak and rosewood. Production combined traditional Norwegian woodworking skills with modern design thinking, resulting in pieces that were functional, well-proportioned and carefully finished.

Heggen also collaborated with designers, most notably Einar Barnes, whose designs for the company helped cement its reputation for thoughtful, sculptural pieces. Although less widely known than some Danish contemporaries, P.S. Heggen is now regarded as an important regional manufacturer within the broader Scandinavian mid-century movement.
