Robert Motherwell (1915–1991)
Robert Motherwell was an American painter, printmaker, and writer, best known as a leading figure of Abstract Expressionism. Born in Washington State and educated at Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia, he brought intellectual rigour to the New York School. Motherwell was deeply influenced by literature, politics, and European modernism, and his work often reflected themes of struggle and humanism. He was a pioneer in elevating printmaking, particularly lithography, to a central part of postwar American art. His recurring motifs, such as the Elegy to the Spanish Republic series, explored the intersection of form, emotion, and historical memory. Motherwell’s prints are celebrated for their gestural precision and poetic resonance.
