Ribbon-Trail Fluted Vase, Smoke with orange
Designed by Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars Glass
This striking fluted glass vase was designed by Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars Glass and dates to the late 1960s–early 1970s, a period when Baxter was at his most experimental.
The vase is formed in a smoky grey glass with a bold amber ribbon-trail spiralling through the body. The internal trail appears to float within the glass, creating a strong sense of movement and depth. The gently fluted cylindrical form allows the colour to shift as the vase is turned, catching and refracting light beautifully.
Ribbon-trail designs were part of Whitefriars’ push beyond traditional domestic glassware into more sculptural, expressive forms. Baxter, trained as a sculptor, was instrumental in this shift. His work at Whitefriars helped define British studio glass of the post-war period, and pieces from this era are now highly collectable.
This example is substantial and elegant, working equally well as a standalone sculptural object or with long stems. A particularly good scale for floor, console or dining table display.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks. Light surface wear consistent with age.
