Extremely Rare Small Wooden Bull by Aarika (Finland) 1960s
Aarikka Wooden Male Cow (Bull) - 1960s Finnish Design
Aarikka produced a small series of wooden animals during the 60s and 70s, each made from turned birch with simple sculptural shapes. The cows are particularly sought after - they were made in small numbers and very few survive in good condition.
Aarikka is one of Finland’s most recognisable design houses, founded in 1954 by Kaija Aarikka. Known for its use of natural materials and its distinctly Scandinavian approach, the company built its reputation on simple, sculptural forms crafted from Finnish wood.
Originally starting with hand-turned wooden buttons, Aarikka expanded into homeware and decorative objects, creating pieces that feel warm, tactile and quietly playful. Their wooden animal figures are now highly collected, each one reflecting the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and its clear design language of rounded forms and pared-back detail.
A beautifully made 1960s wooden bull by Aarikka, Finland. Aarikka were known throughout the 1960s and 70s for their hand-turned wooden animals and toys - playful, minimal forms made from smooth Finnish birch. These cows are among the rarest pieces from that period and almost never appear for sale.
This bull has the classic rounded body, turned wooden legs and the distinctive curved horns that give it its character. The wood has the soft, tactile finish Aarikka is known for.
A lovely collectible piece of Scandinavian mid-century design.
