David Hockney, (b 1937)

A leafing figure in 20th-century art. David Hockney is known for his vibrant use of colour and innovative approach across painting, photography and digital media. While his Californian pool paintings of the 1060s made him internationally famous, "Pool and Steps, Le Nid Du Duc" (1971) was painted during a stay at director Tony Richardson's villa in Provence, France.

Though created in Europe, the work shares the serene atmosphere and clean geometry of his earlier Los Angeles scenes. It reflects Hockney's enduring fascination with water, light and space, hallmarks of his most iconic imagery.
