Phil Rogers (1951-2020) Ash Glazed Bowl
Phil Rogers Ash-Glazed Bowl
A large stoneware bowl by Phil Rogers, finished in a rich olive ash glaze with incised decoration to the interior. The broad open form is characteristic of Rogers’ work, combining practicality with a strong sense of proportion. The glaze pools and darkens towards the centre of the bowl, revealing the effects of firing and the natural variation that Rogers embraced throughout his career.
About the Potter
Phil Rogers (1951-2020) was born in Newport, South Wales, and initially trained as a painter before discovering pottery in the 1970s. He later established his workshop in Rhayader, Mid Wales, where he spent more than four decades making pottery and researching traditional ceramic techniques.
Rogers developed a particular interest in the pottery traditions of Korea, Japan and China, travelling extensively to study historic ceramics and traditional kiln practices. He became especially known for his work with ash glazes, publishing the influential book Ash Glazes, which remains a key reference for studio potters today. His later book Throwing Pots is still widely used by students and professional potters alike.
Unlike many contemporary ceramicists, Rogers dedicated himself to refining traditional forms rather than pursuing novelty. He believed that bowls, jars and domestic vessels had evolved over centuries for good reason, and his work reflects a deep respect for those traditions. This bowl embodies that philosophy: a functional object elevated through careful proportion, subtle decoration and an exceptional understanding of clay, glaze and firing.
His work is represented in numerous public collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, York Art Gallery and the National Museum of Wales.
