Pair of Black 'Program' Chairs by Frank Guille for Kandya, (1950s) UK
Designer: Frank Guille
Manufacturer: Kandya, England
Requires restoration before being sold
A pair of rare 'Program' bar stools designed by British modernist Frank Guille for Kandya in the 1950s. These stools exemplify Guille’s clean, functional aesthetic and commitment to honest materials.
Each stool is constructed from a minimal steel rod frame with its original black powder-coated finish, a solid beech backrest, and a moulded plywood seat. The seats retain their original black leatherette upholstery, though reupholstery is recommended. The sculptural steel bases are in pristine condition, adding visual lightness and architectural clarity to the design.
These stools are both practical and striking—perfect for a kitchen island, bar, or studio workspace.
About the Designer
Frank Guille (born 1926) trained under Robin Day and Gordon Russell, and became known for his practical, well-made domestic furniture produced mainly through Kandya during the 1950s and 60s. He favoured rational, pared-back construction and worked with modern industrial materials without losing a sense of warmth or tactility.
Condition
Steel frames and wooden backs are in excellent vintage condition. Original seats are structurally intact but would benefit from reupholstery (available on request).
