Model 9834 ‘Icicle’ Vase, Sage
Designed by Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars Glass

This sculptural glass vase is the Whitefriars Model 9834 ‘Icicle’, designed by Geoffrey Baxter in the late 1960s. Shown here in a soft sage green, the vase is a classic example of Baxter’s experimental approach to texture and light.

The design is characterised by its vertically ribbed surface, created by pressing molten glass into a heavily textured mould. The irregular, ice-like pattern refracts light beautifully, giving the vase depth and movement even when empty. The clear, heavily weighted base provides contrast and stability, a typical feature of Whitefriars production during this period.

Geoffrey Baxter was one of Whitefriars’ most influential designers. Trained as a sculptor, he joined Whitefriars in the 1950s and became known for pushing the boundaries of traditional glassmaking. His work from the 1960s and early 1970s is especially sought after, with textured ranges such as Bark, Drunken Bricklayer and Icicle now considered icons of British post-war design.

This example is in very good vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. A versatile piece that works equally well as a standalone object or with a single stem or dried arrangement.
