Set of 4 Model 316 Dining Chairs by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1960s)

A fully restored and reupholstered set of four Model 316 dining chairs designed by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen for Søborg Møbelfabrik, Denmark. Produced in the 1960s, these are beautifully made mid-century chairs with the refined detailing that defines Hvidt & Mølgaard’s work.

The Model 316 is known for its sculpted teak backrest, gentle tapering legs and clean, architectural frame. The back is joined using exposed peg joints, a small but very deliberate detail that shows off the craftsmanship of Søborg’s workshops. The design is elegant, minimal and extremely comfortable - typical of the duo’s approach to functional, long-lasting furniture.

The teak has the rich, warm tone associated with Danish production of this era, and the proportions make them ideal around both vintage and contemporary dining tables.

About the Designers
Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993) were key figures in Danish modernism. Working together from 1944 to 1975, they developed some of Denmark’s most recognisable furniture for manufacturers including France & Søn, Fritz Hansen and Søborg Møbelfabrik. Their designs emphasised precision, clean lines and advanced joinery techniques - often combining traditional craftsmanship with early forms of modular, export-friendly construction.

These have been fully stripped back to their wooden frames, the wood restored and the chairs professionally reupholstered in our studio using a midnight blue wool tweed by Camira fabrics.
