Danish Teak Dining Chair by Arne Hovmand-Olsen for Mogens Kold (1960s)

A beautifully balanced Danish teak dining chair designed by Arne Hovmand-Olsen for Mogens Kold in the 1960s. This is a classic example of mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship, with refined proportions, softly tapered legs and a strong frame that still feels light in the room.

Hovmand-Olsen was known for creating furniture that was practical and understated, but always with an intelligent attention to detail. His chairs in particular are admired for their comfort and simplicity, with subtle shaping that gives them a calm, timeless presence.

This chair has been carefully restored in house. The teak frame has been stripped back and re-oiled using high quality Danish oil, bringing out the warmth and grain of the wood. The seat has been hand woven by us using Danish paper cord sourced from Denmark, in the traditional method. The result is a chair that feels clean, honest and beautifully made, with the kind of texture and craftsmanship that is increasingly hard to find.

A perfect dining chair for a Scandinavian interior, and equally good as a desk or occasional chair.

Designer - Arne Hovmand-Olsen (1919–1989)

Arne Hovmand-Olsen was a Danish furniture designer born in Kirkeby Sogn, Denmark, in 1919. Raised in a farming family, he showed a strong early interest in drawing and making things, which led to an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker with P. Olsen Sibast in 1938. After completing formal training in furniture design, including study at technical furniture design school, Hovmand-Olsen established his own design studio in 1944, blending traditional woodworking skill with modern design thinking.

Across the 1950s and 1960s he became known for his clean yet expressive furniture, creating seating, tables, cabinets and occasional pieces for leading Danish makers such as Bramin, Elven Geertsen, J.L. Møller, Jutex and particularly Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik.

Hovmand-Olsen’s work is characterised by its organic lines, subtle joinery and emphasis on natural wood, especially teak, oak and rosewood. Although not as widely documented as some contemporaries, his furniture enjoys strong collector interest today and represents a distinctive voice within mid-century Scandinavian design.
