Large ‘Tidy’ Stoneware Vessel by Mike Dodd, England

A large ‘Tidy’ stoneware vessel by British studio potter Mike Dodd (b.1943), standing 20cm high. The faceted form is finished in a river iron glaze over a granite glaze and impressed with the potter’s seal to the base.

Mike Dodd is regarded as one of Britain’s leading studio potters and has worked as an independent maker for over fifty years. After studying at Eastbourne College of Art, he established his first workshop in Devon before settling at Cocking, West Sussex, where he has continued to make pottery since the late 1960s. His work is deeply rooted in the traditions of the British Studio Pottery movement established by Bernard Leach, while also reflecting the influence of Japanese pottery and the philosophy of making functional objects for everyday use.

Dodd is best known for producing domestic stoneware using locally sourced clays, wood ash and iron-rich glazes. Every piece is thrown, glazed and high-fired in his own workshop, with subtle variations reflecting the handmade nature of studio pottery. His work is represented in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Crafts Council Collection, the York Art Gallery and numerous public and private collections throughout the UK.

This vessel is from Dodd’s ‘Tidy’ series, a group of functional containers distinguished by their faceted forms and understated glazing, demonstrating his long-standing interest in proportion, utility and the natural qualities of fired clay.
