One of the most recognisable lighting designs of the twentieth century, the Panthella perfectly captures Verner Panton’s optimistic, sculptural approach to design. Conceived as both a functional light source and an object of beauty, its flowing silhouette and softly diffused light have made it an enduring icon of Danish modern design.

Designed in collaboration with Louis Poulsen in 1971, the Panthella was one of Panton’s favourite creations. Unlike conventional lamps, where the shade simply conceals the light source, the Panthella was engineered so that both the shade and trumpet-shaped base reflect and diffuse the light. The result is a warm, glare-free glow that creates atmosphere as much as illumination, making it equally suited to a living room, bedroom or reading corner.

Verner Panton (1926–1998) was one of Denmark’s most visionary designers. While many of his contemporaries worked primarily in timber and natural materials, Panton embraced new manufacturing techniques, experimenting with moulded plastics, vivid colour and organic forms. His work challenged the conventions of Scandinavian modernism while retaining its emphasis on function and craftsmanship. Today, his designs are held in museum collections worldwide and continue to influence contemporary furniture and lighting design.

The Panthella was produced by Louis Poulsen, the renowned Danish lighting manufacturer founded in Copenhagen in 1874. Throughout the twentieth century, Louis Poulsen became synonymous with exceptional lighting design through collaborations with some of Denmark’s greatest designers, including Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen and Verner Panton. The company remains celebrated for its philosophy that light should shape a space as thoughtfully as the furniture within it, producing pieces that combine technical innovation with timeless aesthetics.

This original 1970s example retains the elegant proportions that have made the Panthella such a sought-after collector’s piece. Its clean white finish and sculptural profile allow it to sit comfortably within both contemporary and mid-century interiors, while its softly diffused light creates a wonderfully calm atmosphere.
