Per Lütken (1916–1998) was one of Denmark’s most prolific and revered glass designers. Working at Holmegaard Glassworks from 1942 until his death, Lütken shaped the identity of 20th-century Danish glass with his distinctive, fluid forms and technical mastery.
When Lütken joined Holmegaard, he inherited the design language of his predecessor Jacob Bang; clean, functional lines rooted in modernism. But Lütken quickly began pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved in glass. By the 1950s, his work reflected not only advances in craftsmanship but also an aesthetic sophistication inspired by international design movements, particularly the Triennale di Milano. These influences led him to refine both the production process and the elegance of the final forms.
What distinguished Lütken's work was his use of heating metal tools to manipulate molten glass into organic, sculptural shapes, forms that feel both deliberate and effortless. His pieces were often blown and finished by hand, lending them a unique character. The result was a body of work that combined Danish minimalism with a deep sensuality: vases, bowls, and vessels that seemed to capture motion in stillness.
Lütken created over 3,000 designs during his lifetime. Series such as Provence, Selandia, and Ideelle remain design icons, and his handblown works from the 1950s and '60s are particularly sought after by collectors today.
