J16 Rocking Chair by Hans Wegner for FDB Mobler, (1970) Denmark
Hans J. Wegner - J16 Rocking Chair - stamped and dated 1970
Designed 1944, Produced by FDB Mobler
The J16 is one of Hans J. Wegner’s earliest and most enduring chair designs - a rocking chair that unites traditional craftsmanship with the simplicity and clarity of Danish modernism. Introduced in 1944, the frame takes cues from Windsor and Shaker furniture, yet has the unmistakable poise and refinement of Wegner’s early work.
Wegner believed that a chair should allow complete freedom of movement, and the J16 expresses this perfectly: a tall spindle back, a generous seat, and a beautifully balanced rock. The curved armrests soften the architectural lines.
Although Wegner designed several rocking chairs over his long career, the J16 remains the definitive example. Developed for FDB Møbler with support from Børge Mogensen, it has stayed in continuous production since 1944 - proof of its comfort, practicality and cultural place in Danish homes.
Today, the J16 is widely regarded as the archetypal Danish rocking chair: honest, functional and timeless.
