Nuutajärvi Glass Bird – “Golden Oriole” by Oiva Toikka
Finland, 1990s
A striking “Golden Oriole” mouth-blown glass bird designed by legendary Finnish designer Oiva Toikka for Nuutajärvi – Finland’s oldest glassworks, founded in 1793.
This sculptural piece features a vivid orange body with deep black wings and a tapering black beak, capturing the essence of the oriole with Toikka’s signature blend of playfulness and craftsmanship. Each bird was hand-blown and finished in the Nuutajärvi factory, making every piece subtly unique.
Toikka (1931–2019) is best known for his imaginative and joyful glass birds, a project that began in 1972 and evolved into a tradition within Finnish design. Originally trained in ceramics, his work stands apart from the clean minimalism of his contemporaries, embracing colour, form, and playfulness.
