Green Glazed Stoneware Vase by Nick Rees for Muchelney Pottery, 2005

A stoneware vase by British studio potter Nick Rees (b. 1949), made at Muchelney Pottery in Somerset in 2005.

The vase has a gently tapering body with deeply faceted sides, a narrow neck and a pronounced rolled rim. Its olive green and grey glaze varies across the carved surfaces, with lighter trails following the vertical facets. The underside bears the impressed maker’s mark and pottery stamp.

Nick Rees began his career in 1972, joining John Leach as an apprentice at Muchelney Pottery in Somerset. Established in 1965 by John Leach, grandson of the influential studio potter Bernard Leach, Muchelney continued the British studio pottery tradition of producing functional stoneware alongside individual work.

Rees spent 46 years at Muchelney, becoming a master potter and working closely with John Leach while developing his own approach to ceramics. Alongside the pottery’s established production range, he experimented with carving, fluting, slips and glazes to produce his own signed pieces.

Following his retirement from Muchelney in 2018, Rees continued working independently from his studio in Somerset.
