Teak G Plan Dressing Table with Mirror
United Kingdom, 1960s
A well-proportioned G Plan dressing table produced in Britain during the 1960s, constructed in teak and designed with the sublet detailing that characterises the company’s most successful midcentury pieces.
The dressing table is arranged with two pedestal banks of drawers and a shallow central drawer above the kneehole, providing practical storage while maintaining a clean horizontal form. Each drawer is fitted with G Plan’s distinctive integrated sculpted teak handles, a detail that gives the piece its recognisable graphic rhythm across the front. The drawers are finely constructed with dovetailed joints and slide smoothly.
The rounded edges, floating top and tapered solid legs soften the piece and create a sense of lightness. Above sits a removable and adjustable rectangular mirror in a matching teak frame.
G Plan was introduced in 1953 by E. Gomme Ltd of High Wycombe and quickly became one of the most influential British furniture brands of the post-war period. Working with designers including Victor Bramwell Wilkins, the company produced furniture that combined Scandinavian inspired modernism with durable British craftsmanship. Pieces from this period remain widely appreciated for their practicality, clean lines and enduring design.
