Ercol was founded in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in 1920 by Italian-born furniture designer Lucian Ercolani (1888-1976). During the 1950s, Ercolani developed a range of furniture using traditional woodworking techniques alongside modern manufacturing methods, making well-designed, solid wood furniture available to a wider British market.
The Model 354 nesting tables were introduced in the 1950s and became known as the ‘Pebble’ tables because of their distinctive, organically shaped tops. Made from solid elm with tapered beech legs, the three tables fit neatly beneath one another.
Elm was particularly favoured by Ercol for its distinctive grain, strength and character. These original British made examples predate the contemporary versions, which are now manufactured in solid ash.
