Janet Leach square stoneware dish with a gently curved form, partially covered in dolomite and iron glazes. The contrast between the warm iron-rich clay body and the fluid bands of pale dolomite glaze creates a landscape-like surface across one side of the dish. The subtle variation in colour and texture is characteristic of studio pottery, where the interaction between clay, glaze and firing plays an important role in the finished piece.

The dish has a quiet sculptural quality, sitting comfortably as both a functional object and a display piece. The underside bears Janet Leach’s impressed JL mark alongside the Leach Pottery seal.

Potter

Janet Leach (1918–1997) was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century British studio pottery. Born in Texas, she originally trained as a painter and sculptor before travelling to Japan, where she met the celebrated potter Shoji Hamada. Through Hamada she became acquainted with Bernard Leach and later married him in 1956.

Although often associated with the Leach family, Janet developed a distinctive style of her own. Her work drew heavily on Japanese ceramics, particularly the expressive forms and bold glazing traditions she encountered during her time in Mashiko. Following Bernard Leach’s death in 1979, she became Director of Leach Pottery in St Ives, helping to preserve and promote its legacy while continuing her own practice.

Unlike the more restrained pottery often associated with the Leach tradition, Janet’s work is frequently characterised by energetic forms, dramatic glazing and a willingness to embrace chance effects created during firing. Today she is regarded as an important ceramic artist in her own right, rather than simply as part of the Leach story.
